That's right, we're talking about Home Alone, the classic comedy that's a holiday staple. Even if you have watched this movie a hundred times, there’s always something new to discover and explore every time you see it and appreciate this classic all over again. And that’s why Home Alone is and always will be a Christmas must-watch.
Home Alone was Macaulay Culkin’s breakout project as a child actor and Kevin remains a benchmark for young protagonists in fiction. The movie also stars, Catherine O'Hara, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Devin Ratray, Kieran Culkin, Gerry Bamman, and Angela Goethals, among many others. After learning to fend for himself, the boy has to protect his house against two bumbling burglars who are planning to rob it.

Daniel Stern, who previously portrayed Marv Murchins in the first two Home Alone films was approached to reprise his role, but declined after reading the original script. Clare Carey as Kate McCallister, Kevin, Buzz, and Megan's mother. French Stewart as Marv Murchins, Vera's husband and an old nemesis of Kevin.
As the mansion is prepared for a party for the royal family's arrival, Peter and Natalie go to pick them up, while Kevin notices Marv and Vera disguised as caterers. He traps Mr. Prescott in the freezer, overhears Marv and Vera's plan to kidnap the prince for ransom, and forces them out of a window. The royal family is unable to attend the party because their flight was canceled, so Peter and Natalie decide to announce their engagement instead. Marv and Vera run back into the house and pursue Kevin, who accidentally ruins the party by running into the guests and knocking over an ice sculpture that turns out to be a frozen Mr. Prescott. Angered, Peter sends Kevin to his room, refusing to believe his story and accusing him of trying to sabotage his relationship with Natalie, who threatens to evict him if he misbehaves again.

When Kevin wakes up and realizes that his parents, uncle, and cousins have all gone on their vacation and left him home alone, he is not scared but in wonderment that he actually did “make them disappear”. In November 2020, Disney began to feature the first three Home Alone films on their streaming service Disney+ in celebration of the first film's 30th anniversary. The fourth and fifth installments were released on HBO Max and were added to Disney+ on December 17, 2021. Now living with his mom, he decides to spend Christmas with his dad at the mansion of his father’s rich girlfriend, Natalie.

Kevin McCallister gets to live that wish, and kids who have watched him in action have lived vicariously through the eight-year-old’s adventures. The huge McCallister family is on their way to Paris to spend Christmas with Kevin’s uncle and his family. Managing 13 kids for a trip, as you can imagine, is nothing short of madness, and things get forgotten and left behind.
Clint Morris at Moviehole gave the film one out of five stars, writing, "From the unappealing cheapish opening titles to the murky production values, it's immediately obvious Home Alone 4 isn't playing in the same park as its beloved predecessor... sad". Joly Herman of Common Sense Media also rated the film one out of five stars and wrote, "recycled gags with none of the original's charm". Jerry Roberts of Armchair Media gave the film one out of four stars. Sue Robinson of Radio Times gave the film one out of five stars, writing that, "you have to wonder why they bothered". Taking matters into his own hands, Kevin sets up booby traps for Marv and Vera.

While the first film in the franchise remains the true original and a classic, the sequels and reprisals of Home Alone have also become popular. But if there’s one common element across all the films that followed, it is the child protagonist who finds themselves alone during Christmas and has to save their home from criminals. Last year saw the release of a brand new entry to the Wallace and Gromit spin-off series with a heartwarming Christmas special.
